A repeat flowering variety is ideal or a rose which will later bear attractive hips. If your heart is set on a once-flowering variety, you may like to consider planting a late summer-flowering clematis alongside the rose, as this will extend the flowering season. For small arches, avoid the more vigorous climbers and ramblers, which could completely overwhelm the structure.
